Jewellery Tips

A comprehensive guide on buying jewellery online

9 Dec , 2015

Diamond Color

These days we prefer shopping online. Thanks to the internet penetration and the craze for smart phones!

Indian Shoppers have no second thought while buying online electronics gadgets, mobile phones, books, dresses or groceries. When it comes to Fine Jewellery shopping, many are hesitant or not very confident of whether to buy or not.

I thought what better way to help Jewellery Shoppers then to keep them informed on few key pointers they need to consider while making a conscious calculated jewellery purchase. Consider these simple tips to help you buy online jewellery without any hesitation:

  1. Look forward to start buying from renowned Brands or Well-known Brands. Brands that have been around for some time and have good credibility.
    • Most of the online stores have a good option to shortlist the collection for viewing based on the brands. Be selective with the brands and then browse through the designs.
  2. Be aware of what you are paying for. Look forward to the fine details of the jewellery when you have selected the design: Few Tips on what to look forward:
  • Metal Weight or Gold Weight (In Grams). This is the indicator on the amount of gold used to make the jewellery.
  • Gold Finesse Purity (22 Karat , 18 Karat, 14 Karat or 10 Karat). Pure Gold Jewellery is made using 22 Karat Gold. Generally Diamond Jewellery is made using 18 Karat Gold, to provide the required strength to hold the diamond pieces. These days the jewelers also provide the option to have Diamond Jewellery made using 22 Karat, 14 Karat or 10 Karat Gold.

gold-karat-explained

*Note : Gold is alloyed with a number of metals to increase its strength and based on the percentage of the other metal used, the percentage of Gold used is reduced and thereby the gold finesse or karat reduces.

  • Diamond Quality and Weight: The Globally accepted standard for describing Diamonds are using the 4C’s of the Diamond. The 4 C’s are:
    • Diamond Color (Actually Means Lack of Color): The diamond color evaluation of most gem-quality diamonds is based on the absence of color.

Diamond Color

  • Diamond Clarity (Refers to the Absence of Inclusions and Blemishes)

Natural diamonds are the result of carbon exposed to tremendous heat and pressure deep in the earth. This process can result in a variety of internal characteristics called ‘inclusions‘ and external characteristics called ‘blemishes.’

Evaluating diamond clarity involves determining the number, size, relief, nature, and position of these characteristics, as well as how these affect the overall appearance of the stone. While no diamond is perfectly pure, the closer it comes, the higher its value.

Diamond ClarityThe Diamond Clarity Scale has 6 categories, some of which are divided, for a total of 11 specific grades.

 – Flawless (FL)
No inclusions and no blemishes visible under 10x magnification

– Internally Flawless (IF)
No inclusions visible under 10x magnification

– Very, Very Slightly Included (VVS1 and VVS2)
Inclusions so slight they are difficult for a skilled grader to see under 10x magnification

– Very Slightly Included (VS1 and VS2)
Inclusions are observed with effort under 10x magnification, but can be characterized as minor

– Slightly Included (SI1 and SI2)
Inclusions are noticeable under 10x magnification

– Included (I1, I2, and I3)
Inclusions are obvious under 10x magnification which may affect transparency and brilliance

  • A Diamond’s Cut (Refers the how well diamond’s facets interact with light.)Diamonds are renowned for their ability to transmit light and sparkle so intensely. Diamond’s cut grade is really about how well a diamond’s facets interact with light.
  • Diamond Cut
  • Diamond Carat Weight:  Diamond carat weight is the measurement of how much a diamond weighs. A metric “carat” is defined as 200 milligrams.
  • Diamond Carat Image Source and Credits: GIA. Original link: http://www.4cs.gia.edu/en-us/the-diamond-4-cs.htm
    • Gold is naturally found in warm yellow color. Gold is chemically treated to produce a range of colors. Commonly the Gold Colors used in Jewellery are White, Rose/ Pink, Green, Grey and Black. These color variations are achieved by mixing (alloying) pure gold with other metal as below:
      • White Gold: Is produced by alloying pure gold with white metals like nickel, palladium and zinc to pure gold
      • Rose Gold: Rose gold is obtained by treating gold with copper alloy. This is also known as pink gold or red gold and is widely used for specialized jewelry.
      • Green Gold: Green gold is obtained by adding a combination of silver palladium & copper
      • Grey Gold: Grey Gold is obtained by adding Silver, Manganese and Copper in specific ratios to the gold
      • Black Gold: Controlled oxidation of 18k yellow gold containing chromium or cobalt can be used to yield black gold.

 3. Check if the Precious Jewellery is accompanied with Authenticity Certificate. Authenticity Certificate reflects the details of the Gold and Diamonds used in making the Jewellery. You may prefer the authenticity certificate issued by third party certification agency.  Sample Certificate can be found at: http://www.diamondgifter.com/certificate.html

Check for BIS Hallmark Stamp for Pure 22 Karat Gold Jewellery. BIS Hallmark is a purity certification of gold articles in accordance with Indian Standard specifications.

4. Check the Return Policies. Most of the online stores offers return policy. The return policy gives further confidence of your flexibility to return in case the Jewellery does not meet your expectation.

5. Ensure the the jewellery is shipped with valid tax invoice. Generally online shipments are shipped with a valid tax invoice.

All said and done, trust the online store(s) who cater to collections from multiple brands. Also, never get carried away with the price or the percentage of discounts offered. If you witness huge difference in the pricing then be cautious. We will soon have a blog around the pricing matrix (funda) followed by the jewelers.

Hope i have helped clear a lot of uncertainty and helped you look forward to buy precious jewellery without fear. The flexibility, collections and the pleasure of buying from the comfort of your home can never be matched with the offline store.

Here is how to measure Bangle size!

20 Oct , 2014

Measuring a bangle size is quite easy. The Inner Diameter of the Bangle is measured to determine the size of the Bangle. Refer the below pic to recap the concept of Diameter

Bangle Size is measured in Inches. Each Inch is divided into 16 parts and then the size is determined as per the marking shown in the scale below.

To provide better understanding, lets take the above example. The Bangle is placed with one end of the Inner bangle at the O inch Mark and the marking coinciding the other Inner end of the bangle is considered for the size. In the example below the size of the Bangle is 2.4

Use a Good fitting Bangle to measure your Bangle Size. If you need any further assistance, dont hesitate to drop a note.

Okay, now let’s think that you don’t have a bangle to measure! In that case, lets try a work around

Measuring Your Hand

This can be used to find your bangle size, but needs to be done carefully for an accurate result. You will need a flexible measuring tape or a piece of string and a ruler.

Bring your fingers together and thumb across the palm as if you were about to put on a bangle. Measure your hand with a string or tape around the widest part of your hand. Note the circumference of your hand. If you used a string measure it against a ruler. Compare your hand circumference size with the bangle circumference in the above chart to determine your bangle size.

Note: This is not an accurate method, and size may vary on a higher side. If the hand circumference measurement falls between 2 sizes then go with the larger bangle size.
